"Sure, you were Jewish in New Jersey...."

..but you won't find out what that means until you get out here."
- Robert H. Rubin, Stillwater OK, 1970

Seems my old man gave a good interview, so I come by it honestly I guess. Here he is in a publication called JPSP, explaining the Jewish Experience at at an Oklahoma Ag-Tech College. Those who know me well will here echoes of his verbiage in both my language and my attitudes today.

Dig it:

Bonus: My first public appearance as a Jew, age 5. And they got my name wrong, presaging my relationship with journalism and writers for many years to come.

Nice. Thanks, Mark. I don't think I've read anything so personal about Dad's beliefs before. That was awesome.

Just stumbled onto your blog (left a comment in the post about Memluks). I like what you're doing here, and I was wondering if you'd mind if I add your blog to a blogroll I'm planning on putting into my blog? I haven't got one in there yet because I simply have not found enough quality blogs to warrant it, but I've been on the hunt. It shouldn't be too long. So if it's cool with you, I'd like to include "Chasing the Fat Man". BTW, my blog is not primarilly a "music blog", but a large portion of it is. Check out my review of the Stones' "Bridges of Babylon" entitles "Burn These Bridges". I think I skewered it Bangs-style, and I'm slightly proud of that one. Peace. jac

It's sure striking how your Dad's values shine in what you do. Especially the commitment to your own heritage, while diving headfirst into the bigger world you live in, warts and all. What a tragedy at so many levels that he passed so young--it's great that you keep his memory alive.
